Thread size is only half the match. The seat (conical, ball or flat) must suit the wheel, and bolt length must give enough thread engagement.

Questions
What does M12x1.5 mean?
A metric thread 12 mm in diameter with 1.5 mm between threads. M12x1.25 has the same diameter but a finer pitch and won't fit an M12x1.5 stud.
What's the difference between lug nuts and lug bolts?
Cars with studs use nuts; many European cars use bolts that screw into the hub. Changing between them needs a hub conversion, not just different fasteners.
Do aftermarket wheels need different nuts or bolts?
Often. Many aftermarket wheels use a 60° conical seat where the factory fasteners have a ball or flat seat, and thicker wheels or spacers need longer bolts.
