Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk8 wheel fitment

The Mk8 GTI is commonly kept on 18-inch wheels, with wider wheels used for road and track tyres. Clubsport brake clearance needs separate attention when choosing a smaller wheel.

Popular community setups

Starting points for a build. Read the notes with each setup, especially if your car is lowered or has different brakes.

18-inch daily

Front and rear
18 × 8.5 inch, ET43 · 235/40 R18

Apex road fitment. A conservative tyre choice on the wider wheel; check clearance if the car is substantially lowered.

17-inch standard-brake setup

Front and rear
17 × 8.5 inch, ET43 · 235/45 R17

Listed for the standard GTI with suitable Apex wheels. This is not a blanket approval for the larger Clubsport brake package.

18-inch track setup

Front and rear
18 × 9 inch, ET42 · 255/35 R18

Documented Apex fitment. Wide track tyres can require arch screw modification and additional front negative camber.

Width and offset guidance

Offset range

Check the exact setup

There is no confirmed range for this car yet. Compare a known wheel with your proposed size and measure both sides.

Common width limit

Measure before ordering

A maximum width has not been confirmed. Tyre shape, ride height and alignment all change the available space.

These figures belong to the setups described here. Combining the widest wheel with either end of the offset range does not guarantee a safe fit. For how ET moves the wheel in and out, read wheel offset explained; for how far the tyre can sit out, see flush, poke and tucked fitment.

Clearance notes

  • Factory wheels use ball-seat bolts. Match the bolt seat and length to the replacement wheel; a matching thread alone is not sufficient.
  • A larger aftermarket centre bore needs correctly sized hub rings; a smaller bore will not seat on the hub.
  • Use 140 Nm: the current Golf manual and Volkswagen CD wheel approval specify this value. The 120 Nm figure widely quoted for older Golfs is not the Mk8 specification.
  • Check the brake template for Clubsport models before downsizing.
  • Factory wheel availability varies by market, model year and edition; use the vehicle tyre label and wheel part number to identify its original package.
  • Check full steering lock and suspension travel with the car loaded. Match wheel load rating, tyre load and speed ratings, fastener seats and brake clearance.

Questions

What is the Mk8 GTI bolt pattern?

5x112, with a 57.1 mm centre bore and M14x1.5 bolts.

Is Mk8 GTI wheel bolt torque 120 or 140 Nm?

140 Nm. The Mk8 Golf manual and Volkswagen wheel approval specify 140 Nm; 120 Nm applies to the older Mk7.

Can a Mk8 GTI run 17-inch wheels?

The standard GTI can use specific brake-compatible 17-inch designs. Do not extend that fitment to a Clubsport without checking its larger brakes.

What tyre size works on 18x8.5 Mk8 GTI wheels?

235/40 R18 is a documented Apex road setup. A wider tyre may need more arch clearance.

What wheel size does the Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk8 use?

Factory wheels are 17 × 7.5 inch, 18 × 7.5 inch and 19 × 8 inch, depending on trim. The stock table lists the offset for each.

What is the Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk8 centre bore?

57.1 mm. Aftermarket wheels with a larger bore need hub-centric rings sized to it.
