The XJ is commonly built around 15-inch wheels and taller off-road tyres. Wheel backspacing, suspension travel and arch trimming need to be considered together when moving beyond factory tyre sizes.

Owners document 3.75-inch backspacing, approximately ET-19 on an 8-inch wheel. Commonly paired with a lift; check the front arch edges and control arms at full lock and compression.
The Cherokee forum documents 4-inch backspacing, approximately ET-12.7. Allow for a lift, trimming, suitable bump stops and tyre protrusion; even this combination can touch the lower control arms.
Width and offset guidance
Offset range
Check the exact setup
There is no confirmed range for this car yet. Compare a known wheel with your proposed size and measure both sides.
Common width limit
Measure before ordering
A maximum width has not been confirmed. Tyre shape, ride height and alignment all change the available space.
These figures belong to the setups described here. Combining the widest wheel with either end of the offset range does not guarantee a safe fit. For how ET moves the wheel in and out, read wheel offset explained; for how far the tyre can sit out, see flush, poke and tucked fitment.
Clearance notes
The reproduced XJ service specification gives a 115–150 Nm wheel-nut range. Torque is left out of the single-value field rather than inventing a universal setting across 1984–2001. Consult the manual for the exact year and wheel.
The listed stock rows are late-model examples. Earlier steel and alloy wheel packages are not exhaustively covered.
Backspacing includes the wheel flanges; the popular offsets above are approximate conversions using the usual half-inch flange allowance. Check the actual wheel drawing.
The XJ uses studs and 1/2-20 nuts. Later Jeep wheels with a different bolt circle cannot be assumed to fit.
Check full steering lock and suspension travel with the car loaded. Match wheel load rating, tyre load and speed ratings, fastener seats and brake clearance.

What wheel nuts does an XJ use?+
The original studs take 1/2-20 UNF nuts. Use the correct nut seat for the wheel.
Will 33-inch tyres fit an XJ without cutting?+
Do not assume so. Common 15x8 setups need a combination of suspension changes, bump-stop adjustment and arch clearance work.
What size tyres does the Jeep Cherokee XJ have?+
Factory tyre (tire) sizes for the 1984–2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ are 205/75 R15, 225/75 R15 and 225/70 R16, depending on trim. Your tyre placard shows the size for your car.
