The 996 Carrera came on staggered 17-inch wheels with 18s as an option, and most owners who change wheels stay at 18 inches because the car's short tyre diameter makes 19s hard to fit. Body width matters most: narrow-body Carrera, Carrera 4 and Targa rears need much higher offsets than the wide-body Turbo.
Porsche's 996 Carrera approval lists 8J ET50 or ET52 fronts with 10J ET65 rears on several of its 18-inch wheels, and a Rennlist owner of a 1999 narrow-body coupe runs original 18x8 and 18x10 wheels on 225/40 and 265/35 tyres.
Porsche approves an 8J front with an 11J ET63 rear (the Sport Techno size) on 285/30 or 295/30 rear tyres for the Carrera, noting arch-lip work on earlier cars. Owners on Rennlist running 11x18 ET63 Sport Techno and GT3 rears with 295/30s on narrow-body cars report no clearance problems.
Apex 18-inch staggered
Front
18 × 8.5 inch, ET50
Rear
18 × 11 inch, ET60
Apex recommends this pairing for the 996 on Rennlist and prefers 18s to 19s on this car because of its short tyre diameter. The ET60 rear sits slightly further out than the ET63 that owners treat as the comfortable narrow-body limit.
Width and offset guidance
Offset range
Check the exact setup
There is no confirmed range for this car yet. Compare a known wheel with your proposed size and measure both sides.
Common width limit
Measure before ordering
A maximum width has not been confirmed. Tyre shape, ride height and alignment all change the available space.
These figures belong to the setups described here. Combining the widest wheel with either end of the offset range does not guarantee a safe fit. For how ET moves the wheel in and out, read wheel offset explained; for how far the tyre can sit out, see flush, poke and tucked fitment.
Clearance notes
Check the body before buying rear wheels. Carrera, Carrera 4 and Targa use the narrow rear body. The Turbo's 11J ET45 rear sits 18 mm further out than an 11J ET63, and Rennlist owners warn that wide-body wheels of the same width do not suit narrow-body cars.
Rennlist owners put the practical narrow-body rear limit at about 11J ET63. Below roughly ET60 an 11-inch wheel can sit outside the arch.
Porsche's workshop data for the 2002 Carrera lists 225/40 R18 front and 265/35 R18 rear for the 18-inch package. Its later approval also allows 285/30 R18 rears on 10J ET65 wheels with an 8J front.
Porsche approves 5 mm spacers front and rear and 17 mm rear spacers for some Carrera wheel combinations, used with the longer GT3 wheel bolts.
Wheel bolts are tightened to 130 Nm. Porsche asks for a thin coat of aluminium paste on the thread and shank, not on the ball seat.
19-inch wheels are possible but tight. Rennlist owners report liner rubbing at full lock, and one running 235 front and 295 rear tyres on spacers says the fit is down to millimetres.
The GT3 and GT2 have their own wheel approvals and are not covered by the sizes here.

Do Turbo wheels fit a 996 Carrera?+
The 8J ET50 fronts do, as that matches the Carrera's 18-inch front. The 11J ET45 rears are for the wide body and sit about 18 mm further out than a narrow-body 11J ET63, so they are a poor fit on a Carrera, Carrera 4 or Targa.
How wide a rear wheel fits a narrow-body 996?+
An 18x11 ET63 with a 295/30 R18 tyre. Porsche approves that size for the Carrera, and owners run Sport Techno and GT3 rears in it without clearance trouble.
Should I fit 19-inch wheels to a 996?+
Most owners and Apex recommend 18s. The 996's short tyre diameter leaves little room for 19s, and owners who run them report rubbing at full lock.
What size tyres does the Porsche 911 996 have?+
Factory tyre (tire) sizes for the 1997–2005 Porsche 911 996 are 205/50 R17, 255/40 R17, 225/40 R18, 265/35 R18 and 295/30 R18, depending on trim, with wider rears on staggered setups. Your tyre placard shows the size for your car.
What wheel size does the Porsche 911 996 use?+
Factory wheels are 17 × 7 inch, 17 × 9 inch, 18 × 7.5 inch, 18 × 10 inch, 18 × 8 inch and 18 × 11 inch, depending on trim. The stock table lists the offset for each.
What is the Porsche 911 996 centre bore?+
71.6 mm. Aftermarket wheels with a larger bore need hub-centric rings sized to it.
What is the Porsche 911 996 wheel bolt torque?+
130 Nm (about 96 lb-ft) for the original bolts. Confirm in your handbook, especially with aftermarket wheels or bolts.
