Holden Commodore 2nd gen (VN/VP/VR/VS) wheel fitment

The VN to VS Commodores left the factory on 14, 15 or 16-inch wheels, with the V8 and SS models on 16x7. Owners usually upgrade to 17 or 18-inch wheels from later Commodores or the aftermarket, and the main things to get right are the 5x120 drilling, the 69.5 mm hub and an offset that clears both the strut and the guard.

Width and offset guidance

Offset range

Check the exact setup

There is no confirmed range for this car yet. Compare a known wheel with your proposed size and measure both sides.

Common width limit

Measure before ordering

A maximum width has not been confirmed. Tyre shape, ride height and alignment all change the available space.

These figures belong to the setups described here. Combining the widest wheel with either end of the offset range does not guarantee a safe fit. For how ET moves the wheel in and out, read wheel offset explained; for how far the tyre can sit out, see flush, poke and tucked fitment.

Clearance notes

  • Every VN to VS uses 5x120 with a 69.5 mm hub and M12x1.5 wheel nuts. Aftermarket wheels with a 72.6 or 73.1 mm bore need hub-centric rings down to 69.5 mm.
  • VT, VX, VY and VZ Commodores keep the same 5x120 pattern and 69.5 mm hub, so their factory wheels bolt on. Their 17 and 18-inch wheels are mostly 8 inches wide at ET48, which puts them further inboard than the second-generation's ET43 wheels, so check the gap to the strut.
  • VE and VF Commodore wheels have a smaller centre bore of about 67 mm and will not seat on the VN to VS hub without machining.
  • The HSV versions of the VR and VS used 17x8 ET48 wheels with 235/45 R17 tyres, a useful reference for a 17-inch upgrade on the same body.
  • Match the nut seat to the wheel. Wheels from other cars or the aftermarket may need a different taper from the factory nuts.
  • We have not confirmed Holden's wheel-nut torque for this generation. Use the figure in the owner's handbook or workshop manual.
  • Check full steering lock and suspension travel with the car loaded. Match wheel load rating, tyre load and speed ratings, fastener seats and brake clearance.

Questions

What is the bolt pattern of a VN, VP, VR or VS Commodore?

5x120, with a 69.5 mm centre bore and M12x1.5 wheel nuts.

Do VT to VZ Commodore wheels fit a VN to VS?

They share the 5x120 pattern and 69.5 mm hub, so they bolt on. Most later 17 and 18-inch Holden wheels are 8 inches wide at ET48, so they sit a little further in than the factory ET43 wheels.

Do VE or VF Commodore wheels fit a VS?

Not directly. The VE and VF wheels have a smaller centre bore, about 67 mm, so they won't sit on the 69.5 mm hub of the earlier car without being machined.

What size wheels did the VS SS come with?

16x7 ET43 with 225/50 R16 tyres, the same size as other VN to VS V8s. The HSV versions had 17x8 ET48 with 235/45 R17.

What size tyres does the Holden Commodore 2nd gen (VN/VP/VR/VS) have?

Factory tyre (tire) sizes for the 1988–2000 Holden Commodore 2nd gen (VN/VP/VR/VS) are 205/65 R15, 185/75 R14, 215/55 R16 and 225/50 R16, depending on trim. Your tyre placard shows the size for your car.

What is the Holden Commodore 2nd gen (VN/VP/VR/VS) centre bore?

69.5 mm. Aftermarket wheels with a larger bore need hub-centric rings sized to it.
