BMW Z3 E36/7/E36/8 wheel fitment

The Z3 roadster and coupé use E36-era BMW wheel mounting, so a wide range of factory BMW and aftermarket wheels bolt straight on. Most owners move from the 15 or 16-inch wheels to staggered 17s or 18s, and the main question is how much wheel the narrower four-cylinder rear body will take.

Factory staggered 17s on a 16-inch car

Front
17 × 7.5 inch, ET41 · 225/45 R17
Rear
17 × 8.5 inch, ET41 · 245/40 R17

Owners on ZRoadster.org fit the BMW 7.5 and 8.5-inch staggered 17s to cars that came on 16s, including four-cylinder narrowbody cars, without spacers. One 1.9 owner says the 245/40 rears fill the arches better than the standard rear wheel.

E46 18-inch staggered

Front
18 × 8 inch, ET40 · 225/40 R18
Rear
18 × 9 inch, ET45 · 225/40 R18

A ZRoadster.org thread covers fitting E46-size 18x8 ET40 front and 18x9 ET45 rear wheels with 225/40 R18 all round, and an experienced member confirms they fit. The high rear offset leaves room for a spacer to bring the rear out.

Width and offset guidance

Offset range

Check the exact setup

There is no confirmed range for this car yet. Compare a known wheel with your proposed size and measure both sides.

Common width limit

Measure before ordering

A maximum width has not been confirmed. Tyre shape, ride height and alignment all change the available space.

These figures belong to the setups described here. Combining the widest wheel with either end of the offset range does not guarantee a safe fit. For how ET moves the wheel in and out, read wheel offset explained; for how far the tyre can sit out, see flush, poke and tucked fitment.

Clearance notes

  • Many four-cylinder Z3s have a narrower rear body and track than the six-cylinder cars, which owners call narrowbody and widebody. Owners still fit the factory 17x8.5 ET41 rear to narrowbody cars, but check rear arch clearance before going wider or lower in offset.
  • Owners on ZRoadster.org treat about 8.5J ET41, or 8J ET35, as the most the front will take before the wheel sits past the arch. Low-offset fronts such as 17x8 ET20 stick out.
  • Owners on the Spanish BMWFAQ forum recommend 17x8 ET20 rears, such as E39 5 Series wheels, and up to 17x9 ET22 on a lowered car. One poster doubts the ET20 rear suits a narrowbody. E39 wheels have a larger bore and need hub-centric rings.
  • M Roadster and M Coupé use a wider 17x9 rear wheel. Sources disagree on its offset, so the M cars are not listed in the stock sizes here.
  • Published wheel-bolt torque figures for the Z3 differ between sources, so none is given here. Use the figure in the owner's handbook for the car.
  • Use wheel bolts with the seat type and thread length the replacement wheel needs.
  • Check full steering lock and suspension travel with the car loaded. Match wheel load rating, tyre load and speed ratings, fastener seats and brake clearance.

Questions

What is the BMW Z3 bolt pattern?

5x120, with a 72.6 mm centre bore and M12x1.5 wheel bolts, for roadster and coupé.

Will the staggered 17-inch wheels fit a four-cylinder narrowbody Z3?

Owners report that the factory 17x7.5 ET41 front and 17x8.5 ET41 rear, on 225/45 R17 and 245/40 R17 tyres, fit narrowbody cars without spacers.

What tyres suit 18-inch wheels on a Z3?

225/40 R18 keeps the rolling diameter within about 1% of the factory 225/50 R16, and owners use it on 18x8 and 18x9 wheels.

Do E36 3 Series wheels fit the Z3?

The mounting is the same, 5x120 with a 72.6 mm bore and M12 bolts. The staggered 17x7.5 ET41 and 17x8.5 ET41 sizes match the Z3's own 17-inch option, but check offsets on other designs against the arch limits above.

What wheel size does the BMW Z3 E36/7/E36/8 use?

Factory wheels are 16 × 7 inch, 15 × 7 inch, 17 × 7.5 inch and 17 × 8.5 inch, depending on trim. The stock table lists the offset for each.

What is the BMW Z3 E36/7/E36/8 centre bore?

72.6 mm. Aftermarket wheels with a larger bore need hub-centric rings sized to it.
