Volvo 240 1st gen (242/244/245) wheel fitment

The 240 is a rear-wheel-drive Volvo, and its wheels sit at a low offset of around ET20, unlike the front-wheel-drive Volvos that followed. Most came on 14-inch wheels, with 15-inch Virgo alloys on the GLT and Turbo. Owners usually move up to 15 or 16-inch Volvo wheels, and anything bigger tends to need rear arch work.

Owners on the Volvo Owners Club forum say the 15-inch Virgo alloys from a 240 GLT bolt straight on to other 240s with the same fitment, and they are one of the most common upgrades from the 14-inch wheels.

Check the exact setup

There is no confirmed range for this car yet. Compare a known wheel with your proposed size and measure both sides.

Common width limit

Measure before ordering

A maximum width has not been confirmed. Tyre shape, ride height and alignment all change the available space.

These figures belong to the setups described here. Combining the widest wheel with either end of the offset range does not guarantee a safe fit. For how ET moves the wheel in and out, read wheel offset explained; for how far the tyre can sit out, see flush, poke and tucked fitment.

Clearance notes

  • The 240 uses a rear-wheel-drive offset of about ET20. Wheels from front-wheel-drive Volvos such as the 850, S70, V70 and later 960, S90 and V90 sit around ET38 to ET49, so owners on the Volvo Owners Club forum say they need spacers of 20 mm or more to fit.
  • Forum owners report that wheels from the 740, 760 and 940 generally fit the 240, but check caliper clearance on any wheel from another model.
  • Sources disagree on the offset of the 14-inch wheel, with some listing ET20 and some ET25.
  • Bigger wheels usually need arch work. One 242 GT owner on StanceWorks runs 17x7.5 ET20 front and 17x8.5 ET20 rear with 205/45 R17 and 215/45 R17 tyres, but with 5 mm spacers and the rear arches cut and folded. Another owner on the Volvo Owners Club forum runs 17x8 ET35 with 20 mm front and 30 mm rear adapters and rolled rear arches.
  • Owners say the rear arch lip on the 240 is thick and hard to roll, and that 16-inch wheels can touch the rear arches on compression once spacers are added.
  • The hub bore is 65.1 mm. Aftermarket wheels with a larger bore need hub-centric rings.
  • Wheel nuts are 1/2-20 UNF. Use nuts with the seat type the new wheel needs.
  • We have not confirmed Volvo's wheel-nut torque for the 240. Use the figure in the owner's handbook.
  • Check full steering lock and suspension travel with the car loaded. Match wheel load rating, tyre load and speed ratings, fastener seats and brake clearance.

What is the bolt pattern of a Volvo 240?

5x108, with a 65.1 mm centre bore and 1/2-20 UNF wheel nuts, on the 242, 244 and 245 alike.

Do 740 and 940 wheels fit a 240?

Owners on the Volvo Owners Club forum say wheels from the 740, 760 and 940 generally fit, as they share the 5x108 pattern and a rear-wheel-drive offset. Wheels from the 850 and other front-wheel-drive Volvos have a much higher offset and need spacers.
