Volkswagen Golf / GTI / R Mk6 wheel fitment

The Mk6 Golf uses the same 5x112 hub, M14 bolts and 18x7.5 ET51 factory size as the Mk5 GTI, so many wheels suit both. GTI and R owners usually stay at 18 inches and go slightly wider and lower in offset than the factory 7.5-inch wheels to fill the arches without rubbing.

5x112 bolt pattern · 57.1 mm centre bore · Stock wheels: 18 × 7.5, 17 × 7.5, 17 × 7, 16 × 6.5, 15 × 6 inch · Stock tyres: 225/40 R18, 225/45 R17, 205/55 R16, 195/65 R15

Popular community setups

Starting points for a build. Read the notes with each setup, especially if your car is lowered or has different brakes.

18x8 ET45 on factory-size tyres

Front and rear
18 × 8 inch, ET45 · 225/40 R18

Konig's fit check for the Mk5 to Mk8 GTI, which covers the Mk6, puts 7.5 to 8-inch wheels at ET40 to ET45 in its no-hassle group and says many owners keep the factory 225/40 R18 tyre.

18x8.5 ET45 flush fit

Front and rear
18 × 8.5 inch, ET45 · 225/40 R18

Konig lists 8.5-inch wheels at ET42 to ET45 as the most popular step up for Mk5 to Mk8 GTIs, again on 225/40 R18. Check front arch clearance on lowered cars.

Width and offset guidance

Offset range

ET40 to ET54

Factory wheels run ET47 to ET54. Wheel makers list ET40 to ET45 at 8 to 8.5 inches wide as a straightforward fit on standard arches.

Common width limit

Measure before ordering

A maximum width has not been confirmed. Tyre shape, ride height and alignment all change the available space.

These figures belong to the setups described here. Combining the widest wheel with either end of the offset range does not guarantee a safe fit. For how ET moves the wheel in and out, read wheel offset explained; for how far the tyre can sit out, see flush, poke and tucked fitment.

Clearance notes

  • Mk6 Golf, GTI and R all use 5x112 with a 57.1 mm hub and M14x1.5 bolts. Mk4 and earlier Golf wheels are 5x100 or 4x100 and do not bolt on.
  • Factory Volkswagen bolts have a radius (ball) seat, which Weds lists as M14x1.5 13R. Most aftermarket wheels need 60-degree taper bolts; match the seat and the bolt length to the new wheel.
  • Weds lists 15-inch wheels as unsuitable for the GTI and both 15 and 16-inch wheels as unsuitable for the Golf R because of brake clearance, with 17-inch wheels needing a check of the balance weights on the R.
  • Konig cautions that larger brake packages may not clear every wheel design, so check the wheel maker's brake template.
  • Wider 9-inch wheels sit in Konig's most aggressive group and usually need rolled arches or extra negative camber.
  • Wheels with a larger centre bore than 57.1 mm need hub-centric rings.
  • Check full steering lock and suspension travel with the car loaded. Match wheel load rating, tyre load and speed ratings, fastener seats and brake clearance.

Questions

What is the Mk6 Golf GTI bolt pattern?

5x112 with a 57.1 mm centre bore and M14x1.5 wheel bolts, the same as the Mk5 and the Mk6 Golf R.

What are the factory Mk6 GTI wheel sizes?

The 17-inch Denver is 17x7.5 ET51 with 225/45 R17 and the 18-inch Detroit is 18x7.5 ET51 with 225/40 R18. The Golf R's standard 18-inch wheel is the same 18x7.5 ET51 size.

Will 18x8.5 ET45 wheels fit a Mk6 GTI?

It is one of the most common upgrades, on 225/40 R18 tyres, and Konig lists 8.5 inches at ET42 to ET45 for these GTIs. Check the front arches if the car is lowered.

Can I fit 16-inch winter wheels to a Mk6 Golf R?

Not usually. Weds lists 15 and 16-inch wheels as unsuitable for the R because of its brakes. For the GTI it rules out only 15-inch wheels.

What is the Mk6 Golf wheel bolt torque?

120 Nm for the factory wheel bolts.

What size tyres does the Volkswagen Golf / GTI / R Mk6 have?

Factory tyre (tire) sizes for the 2008–2013 Volkswagen Golf / GTI / R Mk6 are 225/40 R18, 225/45 R17, 205/55 R16 and 195/65 R15, depending on trim. Your tyre placard shows the size for your car.

What is the Volkswagen Golf / GTI / R Mk6 centre bore?

57.1 mm. Aftermarket wheels with a larger bore need hub-centric rings sized to it.
